The Games That Built Our Family | Family, Fantasy & Friendship

Some of my favorite family memories didn't happen on vacation.

They weren't expensive.

They didn't require months of planning.

Most of them happened around a table.

There were too many snacks.

Dice scattered everywhere.

Kids who should have been asleep hours ago wandering in and out of the room.

Dogs barking at absolutely nothing.

Someone getting up to refill a drink.

Someone else putting a little one back to bed.

And in between all of that...

There was laughter.

The kind that makes your stomach hurt.

The kind that keeps you talking about "that one game" years later.

What's funny is that if you had met me in high school, you probably wouldn't have guessed this would become such a big part of my life.

I was a cheerleader.

I loved sports.

Competition.

Teamwork.

Looking back, maybe I've always loved games.

The games just changed.

Somewhere along the way, tabletop games, fantasy worlds, and stories told around a table found their way into our home.

And I don't think they'll ever leave.

People sometimes assume we love games because we're nerds.

Well... they're not entirely wrong.

But that's not the real reason.

We keep coming back because games do something that's becoming harder and harder to find.

They bring us together.

The phones get set down.

The distractions fade into the background.

Suddenly everyone is working toward the same goal.

Laughing together.

Problem-solving together.

Celebrating together.

Sometimes losing together.

Our kids don't just learn how to play a game.

They learn to read one more page because they want to know what their character can do.

They learn teamwork.

Creativity.

Patience.

They learn that sometimes your brilliant plan falls apart because of one unlucky roll...

And that's okay.

We'll laugh about it anyway.

One of my favorite things is watching their imaginations grow.

A cardboard box becomes a castle.

A twenty-sided die becomes the difference between victory and hilarious disaster.

An ordinary evening becomes a story we'll still be telling years from now.

Of course, not every story goes according to plan.

One of my favorite memories was watching my sister's character get completely charmed by a fey.

If you know anything about her, you'll understand why that was so funny.

She had built this incredibly knowledgeable character who understood the Feywild inside and out...

And then promptly fell for the oldest trick in the book.

We're never letting her live that one down.

Then there's *Betrayal at House on the Hill*.

No matter how many times we play, the moment the haunt begins and we discover who the traitor is, the entire room changes.

The alliances disappear.

The rules shift.

Suddenly you're looking across the table at someone who was your teammate thirty seconds ago, wondering if they're about to ruin your entire plan.

The laughter somehow gets even louder.

And then there are the kids.

Their solution to almost every problem can usually be summarized with one sentence:

"What if we just smash it?"

It's... a strategy.

Not always a good one.

But definitely a strategy.

Honestly, though?

Some of my favorite moments happen before the first die is ever rolled.

Planning a brand-new campaign.

Talking about characters.

Dreaming up adventures.

Watching everyone's excitement build because we all know we're about to create another story together.

When I picture our game nights, I don't see perfect organization.

I see bright lights.

Bowls of snacks.

Dice rolling across the table.

Dogs barking.

Kids wandering in for hugs before heading back to bed.

Someone asking for one more drink.

Someone laughing so hard they can't finish their sentence.

It's beautifully imperfect.

And I wouldn't change a thing.

Fantasy has always been about more than dragons and magic to me.

It's a reminder that even when reality feels heavy...

There's still room for wonder.

There's still room for hope.

There's still a little magic waiting to be found.

Maybe that's why these games have become such a big part of our family.

Not because they help us escape reality.

Because they help us reconnect with it.

They remind us to imagine.

To laugh.

To work together.

To slow down long enough to make memories.

That's what we'll remember years from now.

Not who won.

Not who lost.

Not even whether the campaign succeeded.

We'll remember the people around the table.

We'll remember the stories we created together.

We'll remember how it felt.

So if you've never picked up a set of dice...

If you've never played a tabletop game...

If you've never stepped into a fantasy world...

Don't worry.

You don't have to know the rules.

You don't have to know all the terminology.

You don't even have to know where to begin.

Just pull up a chair.

We'll teach you how to play.

Because around here, the games were never just about the games.

They were always about the people gathered around the table.

Until next time, there's always another chair by the fire waiting for you.
