The Smell of Home

The Smell of Home

Have you ever noticed how certain smells can take you somewhere before your mind even has a chance to catch up?

One breath...

And suddenly you're eight years old again.

Standing in your grandma's kitchen.

Walking through your childhood home.

Sitting around a campfire.

Watching Christmas lights twinkle from the living room.

It's funny how our hearts remember through our noses.

For me, home has always had a scent.

Not just one.

Layers of them.

Fresh coffee brewing before the rest of the house wakes up.

Vanilla drifting through the kitchen while something bakes in the oven.

Cinnamon on a crisp fall afternoon.

Apples waiting to become pie.

Peaches in the summertime.

Soup simmering on the stove when the weather finally turns cool.

Then there are the smells that don't come from food at all.

The pages of a well-loved book.

A favorite hoodie fresh from the dryer.

The earthy smell after a summer rain.

Bonfire smoke clinging to everyone's clothes long after the fire has gone out.

Even the faint scent of crayons after the kids have spent the afternoon creating masterpieces that absolutely deserve a spot on the refrigerator.

Some people chase expensive perfumes.

I chase memories.

Because that's what those smells become.

Little bookmarks scattered throughout our lives.

I think that's one of the reasons I love candles so much.

Not because they make a room smell nice.

Because they change the feeling of a room.

Lighting a candle is almost like telling your brain,

"It's okay.

You can slow down now."

The same room suddenly feels softer.

Warmer.

Safer.

More intentional.

It's amazing what one little flicker of light can do.

Our house rarely smells the same two days in a row.

Sometimes it's fresh bread.

Sometimes it's popcorn during movie night.

Sometimes it's coffee that got reheated one too many times.

Sometimes it's two giant English Mastiffs reminding us they definitely live here too.

Life isn't always picture-perfect.

And honestly...

I don't think I'd want it to be.

Because every smell tells part of our story.

Every season leaves its own little fingerprint.

One day, years from now, I hope my kids catch the smell of cinnamon or fresh coffee somewhere unexpected.

I hope they smile without even realizing why.

I hope they're suddenly reminded of late-night conversations, movie nights under piles of blankets, homemade dinners, and a house that was always just a little louder than necessary.

Because that's the beautiful thing about home.

Sometimes...

You can smell it before you can even see it.

Until next time, there's always another chair by the fire waiting for you.
